Control In Agile IS Development Projects: Looking Beyond Agency Theory

Abstract Information systems development (ISD) project control has been traditionally seen as a tool against agency concerns, i.e. to align the interests of participants with organization’s interests. However, this perspective barely fits into agile worldview. Agile methods, that became popular choices for ISD projects, shifted away from commander role leaders, and propagate importance collaboration facilitation. Therefore, it ambiguous why managers projects engage in activities. This qualitative study employs “Gioia method” investigate managerial reasons these exercises draws attention range problems needs procedures can address. The analysis found mechanisms are enacted not only due but also enhance cooperation communication, signal senior management become isomorphic other projects.
